There are strong echoes of that as the real Johnny drifts through life, occasionally reminded of how well "Johnny Marco" the construct is doing, airbrushed into superhero poses on film posters.

Johnny's life is free of boundaries; on the phone to his agent, he looks down at the balcony below, where a model (a Helmut Newton-esque Nicole Trunfio) flashes her breasts at him in the international sign language of starfuckery.

His 11-year-old daughter Cleo (Elle Fanning) is dropped off for an access visit, and Johnny takes her to figure-skating class. In a perfect distillation of Coppola's long attention span, Fanning twirls around the rink to No Doubt's sad, sweet Cool in its entirety.

A day or so later, however, Cleo is back - her mother has some stuff to sort out (we never find out what) and Johnny is to look after her until summer camp.

Besieged by this sudden and extended period of fatherhood, Johnny slowly emerges from the shell of his - as Frances McDormand put it in Almost Famous - valhalla of decadence and tentatively becomes a good dad.

Well, as good a dad as he can be - the pair fly to Italy for a perplexing awards ceremony where Johnny is to be feted; while there, Cleo swims in his private pool and they stay up late trying all the ice-cream flavours.

As Cleo, Fanning embodies the tired but generous personality of a child whose parents have a tenuous grip on adulthood themselves; quietly and emphatically one morning, she cooks Eggs Benedict (in a sweet tribute to the Chateau's specialty) for Johnny and Sammy (Chris Pontius), who is either his brother, or a friend so close he might as well be.

One of the film's most charming scenes is when, on their last day together, Johnny and Cleo have a tea party on the bottom of the Chateau's swimming pool.

The film concerns itself with tableaux that are clearly drawn directly from Coppola's own life - she has admitted as much - and her personalised take on been-there-done-that images of hotel lobbies, swimming pools and beautiful people gives Somewhere a grit that might not be evident at first.
