Today's obsession with big butts goes back – way back – to the days when the butt was king and breasts were just a food source.

Ancient Greeks reportedly kicked their backside to build up their rump and make it firmer. Voluptuous women with big derrières were still in fashion by the end of the Renaissance period when artist Peter Paul Rubens was painting his "rubenesqueis" women with their ample backsides and fleshy bodies.

The first artificial booty boost came with the bustle back in the 19th century. At first, the bustle was the extra fabric of the skirt of a dress gathered together in the back. It created the pop that became all the fashion back in that time. A steel frame was introduced to support the drapery, which was attached at the back of the waist. Later, ladies worn a separate bustle to achieve the same effect. Called a tournure, this bustle was actually made of horsehair.

Today, women are still trying to get this uplifting look. Only now, they are getting that same pop with the Booty Pop – a padded panty that gives you an instant shapely backside. Made of 95 percent cotton for comfort and 5 percent Spandex for stretch, the Booty Pop is adding curves to women without them. They can be worn under jeans, shorts, pants, skirts and dresses – anything where you want to accentuate the rear view. Based on customer testimonies, the padded panty is extremely comfortable – especially when compared to what women used to wear to hide their rear end.

Gone are the days of trying to rein in your backside with a girdle, control-top stockings or uncomfortable shape wear. Today's women are trying to mimic the shapes that are grabbing the cameras and all the attention. It's because of women like Kim Kardashian, J. Lo, Beyonce and other female performers that society has re-introduced this ancient, appreciated look.

None of the hoopla about the booty escaped the attention of entrepreneurs Susan Bloomstone and Lisa Reisler. In fact, it was a report on the growing popularity butt implants – at a cost of about $10,000 a pop – that gave Bloomstone the idea. A former producer for the Public Broadcasting System, Bloomstone realized there must be an easier way to achieve this look than through cosmetic surgery. She reached out to her friend from college, Reisler, a former fashion director. Together they developed the Booty Pop panty.

"The backside used to be something you wanted to disappear, but now it's something you show off," said Bloomstone. "But I felt strongly that there had to be a safer, more fashion-conscious way to showcase the backside."

The women successfully marketed the panty with the built-in padding – getting television celebrities to give them a try. When big stars, like Kelly Rippa and the ladies of "The View" wore them, the world began to take notice. Suddenly Booty Pop was all over the airwaves – on "The Today Show," "The Doctors," "Entertainment Tonight," and Martha Stewart's "Living," to name a few. The press also paid attention, with Booty Pops getting nods in The Wall Street Journal, Newsweek, The Boston Globe, Seventeen and Women's World Daily.

Booty Pops are designed for fun – and come in sweet sounding colors like Pink Cotton Candy, Carmel Nude, Blueberry Gumdrops and Black Licorice. The sizes are kind, ranging from extra sweet (extra small) to super sweet (extra large).

"Candy theme colors and fun sizing from sweet, sweeter to sweetest (small, medium, large). It is the time for women to celebrate their curves ... not hide them," said Reisler.

Women often worry that Booty Pops will require special care, but that is not the case. The egg-shaped booty pads are not removable. They stay in place during wearing and washing. The panties should be washed on the delicate cycle and laid flat to dry, rather than introducing the dryer's heat, which can damage the foam padding.

Another concern of women is how natural the panties will feel to the human touch. The designers say the feeling is all natural and feels much the same as a padded bra.

With the success of Booty Pop, the designers are looking to the future.

"We are so excited that Booty Pop panties have become a part of pop culture and the social media scene. Big name manufacturers like Nike and American Apparel are now focusing their advertising around the booty. We're looking forward to expanding the Booty Pop line to swimwear, sleepwear, jeans and sneakers," said Reisler. "Like we say, ‘Booty Pop' is a poppin'!"

Some estimates predicate more than 1 million pairs of Booty Pop panties will be sold in 2010. If you are on the fence about a butt lift, you might want to be one of those 1 million shoppers who want to give the Booty Pop a try. At under $20 a pair, it's far cheaper than surgery.
