I don't know if you are asking in terms of ballroom dancing in which case John has answered your question, or in terms of club dancing in which case I will attempt to answer your question. Salsa, tango mambo and samba all orginiated from the street. i.e. they were not invented as ballroom dances. They were taken into ballroom dancing where they were standarized and defined etc etc. But the original dances still exist and continue to develop in clubs around the world.

I don't dance tango but my understanding of the dance is that the man improvises his steps around the music and the woman improvises around the man. The music for tango is also specific and you wouldn't confuse it with salsa, samba or mambo.

Mambo and salsa are similar because they have the same roots. Mambo came for Cuba in the first half of the 1900s. The way mambo was originally danced and what people in ballroom and in the US call "mambo" today is not the same. It is much closer to salsa. Salsa music is a mix of Cuban son music or Cuban guaracha music with jazz and possibly other musical elements. The salsa dance is actually much closer to the son dance except that in the United States they changed the dance to a linear motion whereas in Cuba they move in in a rotational pattern, although there is also a linear basic step in Cuban dancing as well.

Musically you can really hear a difference between mambo and salsa but in terms of dance you won't be able to see much difference if you look at dancers in North America. If you go to Cuba or see dancers who have learned Cuban dancing, you will see the difference in the mambo and salsa dances. And in Cuba salsa dancing is called "casino" and has been around since the 1950s. Cubans have a group version of salsa called Rueda de Casino which is danced ia circle with a leader who calls out moves that are performed in unison.

Here is New York style salsa (on2) also often refered to as mambo by people in New York. Note the music. This is 1970s style salsa music which is prefered by the NY style dancers.

Here is what people consider to be mambo in Cuba today. Much closer to the original although this is a choreographed performance and you can see some steps like the basic step in salsa.

Here is Cuban son which is much closer to salsa than mambo is. Son originated around the turn of the 1800/1900. The music is also son and it is this type of muisc that is the root of salsa today. many songs called 'salsa' are actually son montunos.
