Success In Rural America - One Man's Journey
Centerville has opportunity and there are some that can see it better than others. Bill Burch, an entrepreneur with a string of businesses located in southern Iowa, has purchased yet another property in Centerville, Iowa. Bill Burch Holdings, LLC acquired the building in Centerville’s historic downtown square district. Burch commented that the acquired building was, “not on my list” of target properties, but anticipates the purchase of the building will be mutually beneficial for him and for the community. There is no exact plan for the premises yet. Thanks to a business relationship with Morgan Cline spanning over 12 years and heavy community involvement for over 20 Burch has played a significant role in pioneering many significant projects in and around the Centerville area. Locals estimate total investment in the area is in excess of $20,000,000.
A driven businessman as well as a husband and father demands what he calls “an interesting dance”. When asked how he can work so much and still have a great relationship with his family he stated, “I traded watching TV, reading the newspaper, and other non-productive activity for family time. Usually, I would much rather have fun with my family than watch a TV show. I said “usually” because I have a weakness for a few shows on Discovery. My daughter laughs at me when I turn them on.”.
It was interesting to find that Burch’s business roots go beyond the last 20 years. He worked with a business partner to open a branch office of what was then American Capital Equities. “Worst timing of my life. We opened that office on September 1, 1987, about 6 weeks before the market crash. That knocked the wind out of my sails.” He obviously recovered. As for his “sails”, they seem to be quite full.
Operations that Burch owns, partners with Morgan Cline, or manages include:

The Prairie Keepers $18.51 In the remote northeast corner of Oregon lies the ruggedly beautiful Zumwalt Prairie, one of the last native prairies in the United States. A wild expanse of untilled ground covering nearly two hundred square miles, the Zumwalt is almost entirely managed by cattle ranchers. It also is home to one of the highest concentrations of hawks in North America. Marcy Houle, a wildlife biologist and student, first went to the Zumwalt in 1979 to discover what attracts and sustains the hawks there in such startling abundance.Houle explores the vast prairie on foot and horseback, cataloging its hawks, studying its complex ecosystem, and meeting its people. Fueled by her youth, her spirit, her humor - and in part by her naivete - she bands birds, outruns a bull, and pulls together the facetious community of ranchers, townspeople, and government employees. Her findings, eloquently reported, show that ranchers and wildlife not only can coexist, but in some instances must coexist if we are to save the last of the native prairies. In a new epilogue, Houle writes of the Zumwalt two decades later. Despite tremendous changes occurring in the American West, she finds reason for hope in the Zumwalt - in the hawks and ranchers still there, and also in new partnerships that encourage stewardship and sustainable cattle grazing. |
