Dyeable Shoes: Not Only for Weddings Anymore

Most women buying dyeable shoes want them for their wedding. But watch out for the rest of the ladies buying them. They are taking their footwear to the prom, the dance floor and other special occasions.

In one survey of women purchasing dyeable shoes:

·        73 percent were brides who wanted a lovely white, satin shoe to wear with their wedding gowns.

·        Another 10 percent were the mothers of either the bride or the groom. They wanted shoes that could be dyed to compliment (not match) their dress or outfit.

·        About 10 percent were bridesmaids who wanted shoes dyed to match their gown.

·        4 percent of purchasers wanted dyed shoes for a special occasion.

·        2 percent wanted shoes that matched their prom dresses.

·        1 percent were former brides who wanted to breathe new life into the shoes they wore to their wedding by dying them a color.

What's so special about dyeable shoes?

First and foremost, these shoes can be dyed almost any color. In fact, you have a choice of up to 70 shades of color. When you say green, do you mean holly or olive? Kelly green or clover? Fern or jade? Instead of red, there is ruby, apple and sangria. And it's not blue. It's a choice of blue velvet, navy, marine or capri. You get the idea.

And even with the family of colors, you may decide to get a complimentary color and not an exact match. Dyeable shoes give you that option.

You can also get the same colored shoe in a host of sizes. Many shoes are available in sizes 5 to 12, but you can also buy flower girl shoes in sizes 1 to 13, and have the shoes dyed the same color as the big girls' shoes.

Another plus about dyeable shoes is that they cost a lot less than many evening shoes. Why spend a lot of money on shoes you will probably wear less than a handful of times? For 40 to 60 dollars, you can get a stunning pair of heels, with a custom-color match.

What's the hot color?

Just like other aspects of fashion, colors come and go. When a color is hot, it's going to show up on prom dresses, bridesmaid gowns and other specialty wear. Manufacturers of dyeable shoes know they need to keep up and offer their shoes in these same hot colors.

Energetic colors are hot right now, like Sunbeam yellow. Sunbeam is not a stuck-behind-the-clouds color, but a shining-on-your face yellow. No matter what the weather, this color shines.

Another hot color: Iris. This is no shrinking violet shade of purple, but a soft, chic shade.

Want to go a little bolder in the purple department? Check out Lapis, which favors the purple-blue hue of the stone by the same name.

Want a bright color from nature? Try Watermelon or Key Lime. Watermelon is in the fun side of the pink family. It's bright and vibrant and perfect for a party. Key Lime is from the sunny side of green.

And then there is the classic Black and Ivory. This wonderful combination says elegance and style. And best of all, this duo is perfect in any season.

What's the hot shoe?

There are classic dyeable shoes and then there are the season's hot offerings. Pick the one that works best with your outfit and sense of style.

A classic style is the dyeable closed-toe, high-heel pump. It has a rounded toe, a ½-inch platform and a 3½-inch heel. This model comes in sizes 5 to 12. You can't go wrong with a classic.

Another great classic is the high-heel, closed-toe sling back shoe. It's a simple slip-on shoe made of white satin that will go with almost any dress you wear. It has a 2 ¾-inch heel and a more pointed toe. It is available in sizes 5 to 12½, with wide sizes available.

If you want something a little different – but still a classic style – check out the dyeable peep-toe d'Orsay high heel. The d'Orsay is where the vamp and sides of the shoe are cut away, showing off the décolleté of your instep. It is a very sexy, feminine pump.

Want a little sparkle to your footwear? Try a dyeable satin platform with a sparkling rhinestone brooch. Because the shoe is on a concealed platform, it will feel lower than it looks. It has a 3¾ -inch heel and comes in wide widths.

For even more bling, go with a dyeable, high-heel wedge sandal with a beaded T-strap. It has a 4-inch wedge heel and the T-strap is covered in rhinestones. Because this is basically a sandal with three straps across the foot (in addition to the T-strap), it does not come in wide widths.

The next time you are stepping out for a fancy affair, think about dyeable shoes as a great alternative.
