San Tropez Latin Dance School in Montreal
Welcome!
On behalf of the San Tropez team and our great family of dancers I want to invite you to explore the amazing world of dancing.
It is with great pleasure that we share the love of dancing with all of our students. Whether you are learning for a special occasion or just for the fun of it we will do our best to make your San Tropez experience the best time of your life.
Over the last thirteen fun-filled years, close to 20,000 students have danced in our school. They enjoyed our personalized attention, our friendly service and the professional dedication of our instructors to the excellence of their craft.
From its beginnings San Tropez mission has been to create the most efficient method of teaching, to allow each student to become a complete dancer and to have fun getting there. The development of technique as well as styling has been one of our priorities without neglecting the development of creativity and the flexibility of style.
Above all we try everyday to live up to our student's expectations of being the most professional dance school. If you are already part of our family, you know how seriously we face this commitment. You also know already how much fun it is to take lessons with us, perform with us, or cheer on our students when they do competitions or shows. Maybe you have even attended one of our crazy practice parties or one of our magnificent balls.
If you have not, then go ahead! Get to know us on-line or in person. We will literally put rhythm into your life!
The San Tropez Dancers have been in existence for over ten years and have represented Canada at the World Salsa Congress five years in a row. Our unique style, charisma and passion for dance puts us above the rest. Performances include: on stage productions, outdoor events, weddings and other ceremonies, etc. in Montreal and abroad. The troupe offers shows to suit all occasions along with a wide range of styles, i.e. Salsa, Merengue, Cha-Cha, Rumba, Samba, Swing, French Can-Can, Tango, acrobatic Rock 'n Roll, etc. combined with lively animation. Our show schedule is flexible and can vary in length and time.
All organizations in the hospitality industry pride themselves on providing a total and complete service for their clients. The San Tropez dancers have dazzled audiences and left lasting impressions with their performances that are both creative in styling and animated for audiences of all ages.

Rumba $8.79 Using dance anthropology to illuminate the values and attitudes embodied in rumba, Yvonne Daniel explores the surprising relationship between dance and the profound, complex changes in contemporary Cuba. From the barrio and streets to the theatre and stage, rumba has emerged as an important medium, contributing to national goals, reinforcing Caribbean solidarity, and promoting international prestige. Since the Revolution of 1959, rumba has celebrated national identity and cultural heritage, and embodied an official commitment to new values. Once a lower-class recreational dance, rumba has become a symbol of egalitarian efforts in postrevolutionary Cuba. The professionalization of performers, organization of performance spaces, and proliferation of performance opportunities have prompted new paradigms and altered previous understandings of rumba. |

Rumba Rules $29.68 Mobutu Sese Seko, who ruled Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of Congo) from 1965 until 1997, was fond of saying “happy are those who sing and dance,” and his regime energetically promoted the notion of culture as a national resource. During this period Zairian popular dance music (often referred to as la rumba za roise) became a sort of musica franca in many parts of sub-Saharan Africa. But how did this privileged form of cultural expression, one primarily known for a sound of sweetness and joy, flourish under one of the continent’s most brutal authoritarian regimes? In Rumba Rules, the first ethnography of popular music in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Bob W. White examines not only the economic and political conditions that brought this powerful music industry to its knees, but also the ways that popular musicians sought to remain socially relevant in a time of increasing insecurity.Drawing partly on his experiences as a member of a local dance band in the country’s capital city Kinshasa, White offers extraordinarily vivid accounts of the live music scene, including the relatively recent phenomenon of libanga, which involves shouting the names of wealthy or powerful people during performances in exchange for financial support or protection. With dynamic descriptions of how bands practiced, performed, and splintered, White highlights how the ways that power was sought and understood in Kinshasa’s popular music scene mirrored the charismatic authoritarianism of Mobutu’s rule. In Rumba Rules, Congolese speak candidly about political leadership, social mobility, and what it meant to be a bon chef (good leader) in Mobutu’s Zaire. |
