Brand new XBox360 with brand new games freezes, what's up?

I don't get the "red ring of death" but not a full circle of green lights on the front either. Just a quarter of the green circle lights up. MS customer service is horrible. Anyone ever seen this before?
The machine locks up and I have to turn the power off.

A quarter of the circle is supposed to light up. It shows that your controller is connected. As you connect more controllers (up to 4), another section of the circle will light up and that corresponding section on each controller will do the same. As for the freezing, make sure your 360 is in a well ventilated area and off of the carpet or any other fabric. Check the disk and make sure there isn't any dust or debris on it.
