Week 1 Performance Recap for Dancing with the Stars

Dancing with the Stars returned this week for its eleventh season.  The new celebrity lineup is definitely intriguing and some of the celebrities were really surprising in their dancing ability, or lack thereof.  

Here's our review of the performances on Dancing with the Stars Season 11, Week 1:

First Place: 24 points - Jennifer Grey and Derek Hough performed a magical Viennese Waltz that brought judge Carrie Ann to tears.  Len said this dance suited her but he wanted to see what she could bring next week to the Jive.

Second Place: 23 points (Tie)-  Kyle Massey and Lacey Schwimmer did a Cha Cha Cha that was full of energy and performance.  The judges all commented that Kyle is a natural performer and entertainer.

Second Place: 23 points (Tie) - Brandy and Maksim Chmerkovskiy did a Viennese Waltz that was elegant and technically good.  The judges said she made a fantastic first impression.

Fourth Place: 22 points - Rick Fox and Cheryl Burke made a handsome couple on the floor and performed a Viennese Waltz the judges called elegant and smooth.

Fifth Place (Tie):  19 points - Audrina Patridge and Tony Dovoloni started off the entire show with their Cha Cha Cha to Katy Perry's "California Gurls."  The judges thought she danced with confidence and attitude but she needs to push herself more to make it in the competition.

Fifth Place (Tie):  19 points – Kurt Warner and Anna Trebunskaya danced a Viennese Waltz that had the judges divided in their commentary.  Bruno and Carrie Ann loved him, saying they saw great potential in him while Len said he found little to commend the performance.

Seventh Place (Tie):  18 points – Bristol Palin and Mark Ballas danced a Cha Cha Cha that surprised the judges.   Carrie Ann thought she would be boring on the floor and took that back, saying that wasn't the case at all. The judges thought with hard work and focus she will improve.

Seventh Place (Tie):  18 points – Florence Henderson and Corky Ballas performed a cheeky Cha Cha Cha that had the audience clapping.  She is a great performer for any age and you can barely tell that she is 76 years old.

Ninth Place:  16 points – Michael Bolton and Chelsie Hightower had the Viennese Waltz this week and Michael seemed very stiff, nervous and uncomfortable on the floor.  The judges told him to loosen up and enjoy his performance more.

Tenth Place (Tie):  15 points – Margaret Cho and Louis Van Amstel did a Viennese Waltz that was more slapstick than ballroom.  She is a talented comedienne but perhaps week 1 of Dancing with the Stars was not the place to show off your skills.  The judges were disappointed in their choreography, saying that they thought she has some real potential and didn't need the gimmicks.

Tenth Place (Tie):  15 points – The Situation and Karina Smirnoff had a very short time working together – only 5 days – and it showed on the dance floor.  The judges said they couldn't give any consideration to the fact that they were working together for so short a time while everyone else had been working together for three weeks.  The judges also told The Situation to take this competition seriously and apply himself.

Tenth Place (Tie):  15 points – David Hasselhoff and Kym Johnson's Cha Cha Cha was the biggest disappointment to me of the night.  I think the fans had high hopes for this couple but it just didn't translate well to the dance floor.  The judges called it bizarre and a potpourri of madness.

This season's cast of Dancing with the Stars provides celebrities from all walks of life.  As in every season there are celebrities who are favorites from week 1, but others will emerge with training and practice.  This will be a fun season to watch!

my dance recitals tomorrow.. what can i do to get more warmed up for my first pointe dance ?

im 13, having a recital tomorrow!! and.. my first dance is always my worst, because im never warmed up or anything, and i get really nervous.. and im not used to the whole performing thing just yet.. what can i do to help, what kind of exercises can i do as well please to get me really really warmed up, my first dance is on pointe.

You MUST warm up before the first dance especially. If you've got time between changes, do a few stretches to keep your muscles warm and flexible. Arrive fifteen minutes before scheduled arrival time, find a peaceful-ish space (you're bound to find one somewhere in these big theatres) and put your i-pod on and do a few minutes of jazz dance style warm-ups before going through your regular ballet position warmup. Do heaps of tendus, releves and eleves to prepare your ankles and feet.
This gets you feeling really supple as well as confident to hit the stage.
