Social Ballroom Dancing Lessons Are Never Too Late to Start - And They Are Healthy For You!
Do you want to learn how to dance but have doubts about starting too late? Latin and Ballroom dancing lessons are one of the best dance lesson styles to pick up for people who are in their 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s and even 80s (And beyond!). Yes I said 80s! I know an 82 year old woman who takes 3 lessons a week and loves it...
Many of the other dance styles (Like ballet, jazz, modern, etc..) will often demand an unnatural turn out in the feet, leg splits every which way and a back that bends to reach a decent dancing level. On the other hand, the social Latin and Ballroom style concentrates mainly on step patterns, lead and follow, styling, timing and having fun! Surely there is a lot of technique involved, but you can still reach a high level of dancing without having the most flexible body or the youngest of age.
Additionally, the benefits from Ballroom dancing will continue to serve you as you get older. Aside from all the common physical benefits (exercise, balance, etc), your brain memory will also improve. Numerous studies have proven that the likelihood of developing Alzheimer's disease (a disease many elderly people contract, characterized by a loss of memory) diminishes greatly for people who dance consistently. This is due to the fact that dancers have to continuously use their analytical side of the brain in order to memorize steps, remember technique elements and distinguish the right way of doing something from the incorrect way. All this usage of the brain translates into a healthier and longer life. So what are you waiting for? Start dancing Today!
If you are not sure where to begin, search for Ballroom dancing lessons, "your city" on Google. You will be directed to the dance avenues closest to you. Call a few of these places and set up an introductory dance lesson - Most times they are offered free of charge or at a minimal cost!

Is there another type of Ballroom dancing?
I am 13 and wanting to know if there are other dancing types within the ballroom types or any different dances. I have done street latin, latin, New vouge and modern. Are there any more types?
Boat loads more. In ballroom there's two main disciplines; American and International.
American Ballroom has two distinct catagories, smooth and rhythm.
The American Smooth dances are; Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot and Viennese Waltz.
American Rhythm dances are: Cha Cha, Rumba, East Coast Swing, Bolero and Mambo
International Ballroom has Standard (comparable to American Smooth) that includes Slow Waltz, Tango, Viennese Waltz and Quickstep. They also have Latin (similar to American Rhythm) that includes Cha Cha, Samba, Rumba, Paso Doble and Jive.
The dances that have the same name generally do use the same music, but are quite different from each other.
Aside from all this there's country western dances that include a Country Polka, Waltz, Cha Cha, Two Step, and West Coast Swing. There are other popular Latin dances such as Merengue, Cumbia, Bachata and salsa. There are tons of swing varients, Single and Double Swing, Shag, Lindy Hop and Balboa. There's Hand Dancing, many types of Hustle, Argentine Tango, Peabody and many Cajun dances including Zydeco and unique versions of waltz and swing, the list just goes on and on. Kinda like me...

Ballet and Modern Dance (Paperback) $15.99 Whether as performers or as spectators, more people enjoy dance today than ever before. Its extraordinary range extends from classical ballet and baroque court spectacles to avant-garde modern dance, tap, and ethnic dancing. Anyone with an interest in dance has felt the need for a guide to the art`s rich history and complex present state. Susan Au`s lucid text covers the entire spectrum of dance, vividly describing the great performers and performances of the past as well as exploring in detail the dance world of today. A generous selection of illustrations completes the picture, taking the reader from the palaces of the Medici to the lofts of Manhattan, from the dancing of Louis XIV to the experimental choreography of Twyla Tharp and Pina Bausch. A completely new final chapter documents the work of the chief dancers and choreographers from the 1980s to the present, covering offshoots of modern dance such as Tanztheater and Butoh, and recent developments such as performance art and site-specific choreography. The author discusses the upsurge in the popularity of dances of the past, among them ballroom dancing and the Argentine tango, and notes the revival of tap dancing as well as the successful adaptation of Irish stepdancing to the theater. In addition, she records the uses dance and dancers have made of recent technological advances, including cinedance and videodance, CD-ROMs, and the Internet. |
