How do I heat my snake's tank?

I have a 60 gallon deep tank for my snake that currently has an undertank heater. I had a heat lamp that ended up rusting on the metal part of the bulb and smoking-it also destroyed the custom lid I had for the tank. I'm afraid to purchase another light bulb in fears of having it catch on fire when I'm not home, or melting my new mesh lid.
I'm looking for a heating alternative (like purchasing more heating pads or something).
Does anyone know of one? Or does it look like I'll need a lamp.

P.S. I refuse to use heating rocks, please don't suggest them.
Thank you, Chuck. I think I will have to give the lamps another chance, I'm just so nervous and now I have to find another lid for my tank so my snake doesn't burn himself on a bulb. You never turn your heating lamps off? And yes, I'd only cover a portion of my snake's tank with the pads.

Good call on the heating rocks, they're BAD for snakes. You also don't want too much of your tank covered by heating pads, your snake needs somewhere to cool off so you shouldn't have more than a quarter or so of your tank covered by a mat. Try a ceramic heater, they go in light sockets and emit heat that way, maybe it won't do as much damage. What are you using to hold the lights? I have two lights running 24/7 for my ball python and I've never had any problems with damage or fire. They're in those black metal clamp lamps. Good luck!
