Ballroom Dancing Dresses - Looking Spectacular On The Ballroom Dance Floor

There is nothing that can match the buzz that you get when you're getting dressed for a nights ballroom dancing, it's different and very exciting. With ballroom dancing becoming a fashionable American pastime, the dress code is constantly being restyled and changed. We've seen many styles of ballroom dancing dresses on television, thanks to the media's recent interest in covering this elite activity. However, there are several differences in ballroom dress styles depending on the country.

Different nationalities tend to be associated with certain styles of ballroom dancing dresses and the US is no different. American ballroom dancing dresses tend to utterly beautiful, long, soft and flowing. For example, an American ballroom dress usually has a number of layers of skirt, along with other cuts of fabric flowing from the neck and back. In contrast, international dresses are more associated for their heavier fabrics and feathers. Several American styles are also adorned with feathers, but are not the essential accent of the ballroom dress. Most international ballroom dancing dresses are designed for how they look from one angle; either they look good from the front or back, but not usually both.

Glitz and glamour go hand in hand and American ballroom dancing dresses seem to reflect that as they are normally highly decorated with crystals and sequins and come in a variety of lengths. For obvious reasons you won't get ballroom dresses going all the way to the floor - this is probably because a long dress could become tangled in the dancer's shoes and lead to a complete disaster on the dance floor. However, the style of ballroom dress greatly depends on the style of dance being performed.

For example, the Paso Doble is a popular style of ballroom dance that incorporates Spanish culture in the steps. It only makes sense that the dress should represent the theme; this particular dress would have a very dramatic look and more than likely have sleeves, a full gathered skirt that twirls in an easy fashion, knee length, very colourful with maybe some lace edging.

For more current ballroom dances, the dress is usually very lightweight and moves well with the dancer. A popular look for the top of the dress is either halter-style or sleeves that dangle from the shoulder. Strapless-style dresses are not desirable in ballroom dancing, probably because of the danger of an embarrassing public accident with the lady or not fitting properly while moving about on the dance floor.

With such a variety and choice of colors on offer with ballroom dancing dresses anyone who loves wearing color might have trouble choosing which one. It is common American protocol for women to match their partner when it comes to choosing the color of their ballroom dress. However, the color can be anything the couple chooses, but it should be kept in mind that the shoes will need to match the dress.

Whether you are an amateur or professional there are quite a few choices available for finding a ballroom dress to match your needs. Many choose to have their dress tailor made, especially if it is for a competition. This can get expensive though, and for the amateur dancer other much cheaper options are available.
