What to wear for Nia

Being a Nia teacher and a well dance versed student I always get asked "what should I wear?" I remember how intimidating it can be for beginners starting any exercise class. Many people glance over class schedules and see Nia, and wonder, "what is that?" Being new to a class is uncomfortable enough, but having to ask the question "what does Nia mean?" can make one even more nervous. Not to worry, this article will familiarize you with what Nia is and how to prepare from head to toe!

Nia, or previously known as non-impact aerobics or neuromuscular integrative action, is a physical program that conditions the body with the idea that movement can be a pathway for personal transformation and self-discovery.  Nia is designed to give you an entire body conditioning, cardiovascular aerobic exercise. Created in 1983 in California, Nia is thought of as a body mind spirit exercise similar to yoga. The Nia movement form technique is based upon 52 different principles, a mix of healing practices, dance and martial arts. It is a unique blend of jazz, modern dance along with Tai chi, tae kwon do, aikido, the Feldenkrais method, the Alexander technique and yoga. The classes are choreographed as well as accompanied by a very wide variety of music and musical styles, from choral arrangements all the way to techno. Being a non impact aerobic dance form, Nia is practiced bare foot for an even more freeing experience.

When the wardrobe question comes into play, that is up to the individual. Nia is an upbeat, full body moving fun freeing experience. Your range of motion is the function your clothing needs that comes first. Anything that is too tight that needs constant adjusting should be avoided, following along in class should be your main focus. Also, anything too short that could be revealing upon a certain body motion should also be avoided. Full body function, motion and appropriate coverage and the function guidelines. When it comes to styling and specifics that's where your personality comes into play and you can enjoy your activewear. Any kind of clothing that you feel comfortable in and that allows you to have a full range of motion is acceptable.  Skirts, shorts, pants, capris, baggy pants, t-shirts, long sleeved shirts, tank tops etc. Also, accessories such as scarves on the head or hips are used quite frequently. As most progress into the class, their wardrobe becomes another element to the class. A creative and expressive way to further enjoy yourself and become personally linked with your Nia experiences.

With any exercise class or gym outing, its always a personal boost to look and more importantly feel your best. What clothing makes you feel the best? What outfit do you think you look your best in? These are key questions when deciding on your Nia outfits. Remember, wear tops and bras with top notch support, layering support bras is an excellent to get an added amount of support. Want to wear a skirt? Until you are sure that there are no movements you will be performing that would be revealing in a skirt, opt for a skort, just as much fun with no worries for revealing moments. Nia is performed barefoot, so decorate your feet! Nail polish in fun colors, ankle bracelets, and even a toe ring can all be beautiful adornments to your feet.

Whether you are more conservative, outgoing, shy, daring or body conscious you can find the perfect clothes to make you look and feel superb. Conservative? Try long sleeve pants and tops that are beautiful jewel tones, you can be beautiful without showing any skin. Outgoing? Try a flippy skirt or skort, layered activewear tops in bright fun colors. Shy? Try out medium fit fitness capris and t-shirts in modest colors, nothing that will put you in the spotlight, but will still make you feel proud. Daring? Mix it up with different outfits and accessories to really express your zest for life. Body conscious? Long sleeved tops with a nice v or scoop neckline are really flattering on any body type, as well as a long pair of black pants, creating a long lean line on the body.

Having a variety in your exercise regiment is always a good idea. Opening yourself up to new classes can be beneficial for your body, mind and spirit. Being prepared for your first class, be it Nia or another class, arms you with confidence to go in and do your best. Remember to always look and feel your best to get the most out of your Nia workout.

Can I wear black leggings to a dance class?

I'm taking a dance class at school, and the teacher says we need "Comfortable Clothes – Jazz or Yoga Pant and Form-fitted top or leotard". I have black leggings that I'd like to wear and a good top already. Do you think I should wear these leggings?

Also, I'm taking a Jazz/Lyrical dance class in addition to tap this year (i'm a tap vet) and I was wondering if black leggings were appropriate in this class (it's a relaxed class, not super serious - it's not like it's my job).

The leggings would most likely be fine, as long as they are not too tight and don't restrict movement (can you stretch and the splits in them with out them ripping or anything). You can check with the teacher to be sure, but they should be fine to wear to class. For the second question are you asking if they are ok to wear the leggings to a Jazz/Lyrical class or to the tap class? again they should be fine, just check dress codes and/or with the teacher to be sure.
