Harem Pants – A Statement of Fashion

Like many things in modern Western society, harem pants are a blending of ancient cultural attire and contemporary fashion design with an end product that is both daring and comfortable.  You may have seen them slowly creeping onto the racks of your favorite boutique or even at some of the larger retailers.  Low in the crotch and tight around the ankles and calves, it's hard to imagine that it has already been nearly twenty years since harem pants were part of the collective fashion consciousness.  They were a mere novelty only for the most daring last time they were in vogue, but this time around it appears that the fashion world is intent on swaying public opinion in favor of these head-turning trousers.

Harem pants are actually a take on pants traditionally worn in southwestern Asia for hundreds of years.  The closest cousin to these pants found in western culture would be the bloomers worn by active women during the 19th and 20th centuries.  Harem pants as they are known today became popular among men and women in the late 1980's and early 1990's, but they have largely been out of style ever since.

Shockingly, these distinctive pants started showing up on high fashion runways in Europe and East Asia over the past few years, and have now made it into many of the lines of some of your favorite clothiers.  The fashion and style world has been all abuzz as harem pants have become increasingly popular since the beginning of 2009.  Some are saying it’s about time, since skinny jeans have been all the rage, especially among those who probably shouldn’t be squeezing into those tight jeans in the first place.  Others are welcoming harem pants as a stylish clothing option that can be sleek, casual, or chic while being comfortable and form flattering.  With proper accessories or clothing options, harem pants can be made appropriate for nearly any social gathering or situation.

Like all things in fashion design, trends come and go and then are reborn with a few new twists for a whole new generation.  Harem pants are not anything new, but different styles and outfits in which they are being presented today definitely put these funky trousers on a path to being a mainstay in modern closets.  Will they stick around, or be left behind for another go-round in 15 or twenty years?  Time and public sensibility will be the deciding factors.
