Does anyone have information on gold coins "before Christ"?

My husband received 2 coins from a relative who had few details about them. The only thing we were told is that they are gold coins from a period before Christ. They are in very poor condition as they were on a ship that sunk and were lost at see for hundreds of years. There appears to be some type of writing around the edges but it is not all visible and does not appear to match anything I have found while researching online. There are images on both sides of the coins. The coins are different from each other. They are about the size of the current day American dime in diameter but not quite as thick. Also, due to the fact that they were under water for so long, they are in serious need of cleaning. So far, I have not found anything that works.

Possibly a Roman gold aureas. It is not possible to tell from your description. They were small, about 18mm. The Byzantines (Eastern Roman Empire) made a gold coin called the Solidus. This was about 22mm. Of course they would have come after Christ. Are the letters Latin (like our letters) or are they Greek?

However, there were many civilizations pre dating Christ that used gold coins. The ancient Parthians, Sassanians, Egyptians, and Greeks used gold coins.

If yours are truly gold, and not covered by barnacles or some other tough sea deutritus, then they should remain visibly gold. If they are "tarnished" they are not gold. The ancients used high karat gold in their coins and jewelry. Gold does not oxidize like silver and copper do. Perhaps you have brass coins? The Romans used a brass coin as the basis for their currency.
