How do I fray a denim skirt?

I have a denim skirt that goes about one inch above my knee and I want to cut off a few inches and turn it into a mini-skirt and fray the bottom edge.

What is the best way to do this?

P.S.I don't want any derisive comments about how it's stupid to fray clothing...

Cut it off and wash it, dry it and you should have your fray. Usually the washing/drying process is what does it perfectly.
Keep in mind the fray might continue to unravel about 1/2 inch so the skirt might end up too short, so cut wisely.

If you have a sewing machine, I would sew all around the bottom of the skirt and cut about 1/4 inch beneath that..it will keep the fray from going up and up and up.
