Santa Flash Mobs Dance Their Way into the News

Collaborative entertainment is usually perceived as an art form, but would it be safe to categorise the SantaCon as one? SantaCon is a genuine large scale gathering of people dressed in Santa Claus costumes – the focus is on spontaneity and creativity, while having a good time and spreading cheer and goodwill! Can such events help propel us through the Christmas period or is it silly season for misguided entertainers?

 

It's easy to associate uniformity with civilian roles that are for the public good, such as those of the traffic wardens or police officers. Does voluntarily dressing up as Santa require the group to perform an act for the public good? Part of the fabric of social expression – it could be described as a nonverbal form of communication between strangers, indeed when hundreds of people dressed up as Santa Claus and descended on Liverpool Street Station in London on Saturday 11th December (2010) their only challenge was to spread cheer!

 

The requirements were for the Santa's to put on their dancing shoes and arrive in a complete Santa outfit and dazzle Japanese tourists with flair and panache. The flash mob Santa's began their journey through the streets of London, spreading cheer and frequenting a few bars on the way! The first SantaCon was organised by members of the Cacophony Society of San Francisco from as early as 1994 and has steadily attracted new crowds worldwide.

 

The SantaCon incorporates part of the ‘Flash Mob' phenomena, a term used to describe a large group gathering in open public space for a short period performing a dance routine or entertaining the public. The Santa's began dispersing among the many people and bars of London during the busy Saturday. Flash mob (dance) events are organised using social networking sites to generate participant awareness and make use of public space's, it appears to have caught the imagination of advertising agencies who have also used flash mob features in recent ad campaigns.

Leotard w/ large chest?

I am taking a college ballet class after a 7 year hiatus. l have kept up in every area of dance except my classical ballet training. I'm 20 now and its safe to say my leotards from ph grade don't fit me anymore. I'm a size 2 but with a 32D chest. I'm concerned because I'm afraid I'll pop out or won't have enough support when it comes to leotards. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fie this? Tips, tricks, or places where l can find supportive leotards? thanks!

I also have a DD cup and pretty much live in a leotard since I teach Ballet.

A couple of tips:

1. Leotard with a shelf bra. This will NOT be enough support on its own, but it will help and give you a bit of extra coverage.

2. Leotards with low open backs are not as supportive as with higher backs.

3. A sports bra will give you the best support. Make sure you get one that fits correctly, it needs to be pretty tight.

4. If you wear a sports bra, you are going to want a leotard with thick straps or with sleeves and with a mid-to High back to cover the bra. Try to find a sports bra in the same color as your leotard so it isn't super obvious.

5. College ballet classes usually are not super strict on uniforms, so that gives you some wiggle room which is good.

6. Be willing to try a bunch of options to find the right combination of support . It might take awhile.
