So you think you can dance too?

So You Think You Can Dance premiered in July of 2005 and quickly skyrocketed to the top of television ratings, the program continues to top the ratings charts and its popularity has brought dance into millions of homes.

 

The show is a dance reality program which began in American and the UK, and has now spread worldwide. There are now spin off shows in New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Germany, Norway, South Africa, The Netherlands, Ukraine, Turkey, Israel, Greece, Poland and Malaysia with several other countries in the works – so the dance fitness craze has spread around the world.  All dance genres are represented in the show, which includes hip hop, jazz, ballet, lyrical, modern, salsa and others.

The show has proved such a hit that Executive producer and judge on the American version of the show has been successful in his efforts to have July 31st declared National Dance Day in the USA.  Not many TV shows can claim to have been honoured by a National day but then again the program is helping to improve the fitness and health of viewers by getting them interested in dance based exercise and helping to combat rising obesity levels.  Dance classes should not be underestimated in terms of health and fitness as they can burn up to 300 calories in an hour.

The success of the series has been highlighted further by similar copy cat shows particularly in the UK, such as strictly come dancing, strictly ballroom dancing, and dancing on ice.  Part of the appeal of the show is the reality aspect, the relationships and friendships that are formed, and progress that is made.  The Nation gets behind their favourite as with talent shows such as X factor and Britain's got talent, but the difference with So You Think You Can Dance is that viewers can see the instructions given to competitors and take the advice themselves, improving their own dancing and getting fit at the same time.

This strong surge of interest in dance among the public has made many look into local dance classes, and the schedule that's available at their health club.  Remember that if you're serious about taking up dance as a regular hobby or interest it is vital to spend a significant amount of time and energy to really see an improvement.  A commitment is needed to become anywhere near as good as those taking part in the show, however even if you have limited time and don't expect to reach competition standard, even the occasional dancing session will dramatically improve your fitness and health.

Why not use dancing to lose some unwanted pounds and have fun while doing it. Plenty of fitness studios offer great cardio dance classes.   Exercise and fun are not two words that are often used in the same context but with dance they can be.  While spending hours on a treadmill or elliptical machine every week has its benefits, it can get boring and dance offers a great alternative. Fitness studios realize they need to offer variety in order to keep their guests coming back and one way to do that has been offering more and more dance classes, particularly since the influx of dance based TV shows have drawn attention to the craze.

What is the best way to lose weight if you don't have a lot of extra time to exercise?

I am 14 and I want to lose weight. I have homework and other things to do so i never have time to exercise a lot. The only times I exercise are on Tuesdays for gym class and dance class later that night, then thursdays for gym class and dance class later that night, and then every other friday I have gym class. Those are like the only available times I have to exercise. What else can I do besides exercising a lot to lose weight?

Have healthy eating habits, but don't go under 1200 calories a day. That isn't healthy.
