3 Tips For Selecting A Glamorous Ballroom Costume

Finding the right ladies ballroom costume can be a tricky process.  If one subscribes to the philosophy that you get what you pay for, you might be lured into the idea that you must spend a bundle in order to get a lovely gown.  I have not always found this to be true.  Having purchased ball gowns ranging in price from $299.00 to $3500.00,  I have had some of the nicest compliments on the low to medium priced dresses.  The perfect lady's ballroom costume will complement her color wheel, and will suit her particular body and her individual budget.  Here are three helpful hints to assist you in the process of finding a beautiful and affordable ballroom costume:

1.  If you are undertaking a Design-a-gown endeavor, you will have a great deal more flexibility with style, color, and fabric, but do plan on the ballgown evolving throughout the process.  Begin with one or two essential elements.  Sketch it out on paper (or have your designer do this), and play around with different ideas until you come up with a look that you love.  Choose a color that is flattering to your skin tone and that will show well on the dance floor, and fabric(s) that will both accent the design and allow for flowing movement in the skirt.  Allow the designer to give you advice on the fabric, for he/she is most likely the expert in this area.  Take your time, but once you have settled on a design, leave it alone!  Making changes after the project is in motion creates frustration for the designer and for you.   First instincts are usually correct.

2.  Plan on spending appropriately for your dance costumes.  However, "appropriately" does not mean taking out a second mortgage in order to obtain a glamorous, well fitting ball gown.  Expensive ballroom dresses do not necessarily equate to what looks good and feels good on your body.  It is very possible to achieve a fabulous looking costume without exceeding your budget.  Good dancing will be distinctive and noticeable whether you are wearing a lovely bargain ballroom dress or an expensive designer gown.

3.  The application of stones or crystals enhances the dazzle of the ball gown.  Stones are used to reflect light off the costume as the dancer travels across the dance floor. The size, color, and number of crystals is determined by personal preference; the greater the number of crystals, the more sparkly and eye-catching the costume becomes, and more costly.  Again, more is not necessarily better.  Focus on using an adequate number of good quality stones (Swarovski crystals) in creative ways to accent the dress and your body style.

Regardless of being seen in the most glamorous ballroom gown, your quality of dancing is what will take you to the finals.  The purpose of your costume is to enhance your dancing, not to cover up a lack thereof.  That being said, a glamorous ballroom dress in the right color and a design that fits and flatters your body style will attract attention to you and your partner.  It will also add to your confidence and allow you to focus on enjoying the music and the dance!!
