A Brief History Of Burlesque Costumes

Burlesque dance and costumes have now been around for a long time, this honoured tradition of erotic dance combines style, wit, humour and sex appeal, after being born in around the 19th Century Burlesque has often come a close second to the popular yet over sexual strip tease.

For any performer within the art of burlesque, what is important is not just what you are taking off,  but how you tease as you do it.

The Burlesque Style

To the Burlesque artiste the costume is very important, performances are often written around the costumes, and these costumes vary a great deal from glamorous, sexy right through to the almost silly.
In todays world of Burlesque anything goes and you are likely to spot many an outfit from a police officer stripping right through to the classic burlesque fan dance.

The golden years of burlesque started in the 19th Century where dance troups wowed audiences dancing in outfits considered shocking at the time. Above the knee skirts and close fitting tights were among the choices.

By the early 20th century burlesque had full stage shows, these featured other acts such as comedians as well as the burlesque girls, these shows were probably where the burlesque dance became closely associated with the revealing of female flesh as more girls removed clothing during performances.

By the 1960's attitudes had changed and the controversial burlesque costumes were not considered so as the public morals had begun to tolerate nudity and explicit content, this was not contained to theatres  but movies and clubs too. Leaving not left to the imagination as sex stars leaving the burlesque costumes behind and concentrating with things like bikinis which were far easier to remove.

But Burlesque has made a comeback during the 1990's with the emphasis back on the fashion, with homage paid to the great stars of the burlesque era by recreating the styles of the early years and the classic costumes. Including copying the styles of big names like Dita Von Teese and her elegant collection of classic outfits from her feathered skirts, vintage swimwear, many lacy corset or basques and elegant ball gown dresses.
The feel for burlesque and pleasing a male audience is not what has brought this style back, it is the need for women to please themselves and enjoy the show, doing it for themselves and peers rather than playing to the male following.
