A Dance Fusion Like None Before

'Bharatanatyam' which is a south Indian Classical Dance is more of hand gestures to express a string of words, eye movements, rhythmic gaits and postures definitely dramatic with a theme from the Indian Epics of 'The Mahabharat' or 'The Ramayan'. The costumes are mainly of the south Indian culture mainly compose of 'dothi' for both men and women usually made of rich red or green silk with golden border and 'choli' (blouse) and a pleated or frilled cloth hanging from the waist to the knee level. The heavily decked jewelry comprises of armlets, bangles, three fold earrings, a set of three neckwear, a pair of chuff anklets with stream of rows of 'Ghungroo' , the hair tightly braided and a string of jasmine flowers coiled around the hair. The makeup done on the face especially to black elongated lines along the edges of the eyes and red painted lips; a typical South Indian look.

For a world of new tastes and new demands, a new style of dance called 'Contemp-natyam' is now being presented.

'Bharatanatyam' and the American modern dance combination was a treat to the eyes. This beautiful blend choreographed by Freeman was astounding. It truly does come under the label of Modern Art. There is sure a fusion of both the music types. A common platform where the East meets the West. This performance definitely catered to the tastes of both the audience of Indian dance loving and the western modern dance loving crowd. It's definitely going to be one of that unique new trend setting events.

Contempnatyam was being presented by Jaan R. Freeman, Romona Mukherjee and their group of student performers of Dakshina Palli,Inc.
