Belly dance costume – soft and sexy fun

Learning how to belly dance is a great form of exercise as it is dancing. Coming from a predominantly Middle Eastern culture, belly dancing is characterized by the isolation of the hips, stomach, chest and other body parts but mostly focus on movements that are centered from the muscles at the back. As such, a belly dance costume is quite necessary to showcase the movements.

 

Because of the staccato of movements, a belly dance costume has to be made such that it is not cumbersome for the dancers to be in motion. The lines of the costume are usually fit to the body, especially the top but can have a flowing skirt with side slits that provide for extra movement. A variation of the costume can also have a pair of sexy and fitted pants instead of a skirt.

 

There are a lot of variations for a belly dance costume but the basics are still the same. Choose a skirt that is long enough that it touches the ankles but at the same time allows smooth movements. The skirt is just right if the belly, hips and feet can move without restriction or discomfort. Dancers could go with the basic a-line cut or opt for full-circle design for the more experienced belly dancers; the material most commonly used is chiffon because it is lightweight and sways with the body.

 

Harem pants can be used instead of the skirt. As part of a belly dance costume, these are usually designed with embellishments to provide extra flair and a slit on the outer portion of each leg to add femininity and sexiness to the overall look. Most common material for harem pants is chiffon, but other fabrics are also used such as cotton and satin or sometimes even velvet.

 

The top garment is another highlight of a belly dance costume and picking which one to wear may take quite some time. Made with different textiles to show off varied looks, decide which one will pair off nicely with the skirt or harem pants. This is important so that when a dancer moves, the fabrics sway in the same manner to create a soft and fluid movement.

 

The final piece in the ensemble is the hip scarf. Opt for a big one so there is no need to worry about the right fit. It can easily be tied around the hips without doing anything else or wrapped around in a stylish manner if the dancer is petite to complete the belly dance costume.

 

Always choose pieces that are comfortable, soft, and flowing to ensure the ease of movements and motion. These garments come in a wide variety of colors and add-ons that won't make choosing a belly dance costume easy but still a lot of fun.
