The Entire History of Dance In Just 500 Words

As a dancer, you have probably spent countless hours on the floor or the stage. You love the rhythms and the movements, but you can't help but wonder where it all came from.  When did the first person move his hips to the music?

Historians believe that dance originated in Greece around 600 BC.  Greeks used dances as a form of celebration. These dances eventually led to the opening of the first Greek theater.  Once the theater opened its doors, Greeks had a platform to perform their dances in front of the masses.

Many centuries later, dance made its way over to France.  However, unlike the frantic dances performed in Greece, the French preferred the more refined ballet.  The French began performing the first dramatic ballet, Ballet Comique de la Reine, for the royal court in 1581.  Then, for the next several centuries, great ballets such as Swan Lake and the Nutcracker were written and performed.  These ballets continued to rule the world of dance for centuries.

Then, in 1899, a new style of dancer was born—Fred Astaire.  In 1906, young Astaire danced for the first time professionally.  While ballets continued to draw crowds, people could not help but notice that the face of dance was changing. That became even more evident when, it 1913, the foxtrot became popular.  Then, in 1922, the Charleston also worked its way onto the dance scene.  Suddenly, there were more options than ever before.

By 1933, Fred Astaire was no longer the child who made headlines at the age of six. Now a grown man, he teamed up with Ginger Rogers for the first time in the film Flying Down to Rio.  Suddenly the entire world wanted to throw on a pair of tap shoes and learn how to move.

By the 1950's, people were trading in their tap shoes for jazz moves.  Jazz dance started its domination of musical theater, and it is still popular to this day.  However, it did take a backseat when the Twist dance craze hit in the early 1960's.  Suddenly, people didn't need to memorize a lot of steps to dance. All they needed to do was twist their hips and they could dance like a star.

By the time 1971 hit, people were ready for a new style of dance, and it came in the form of hip-hop.  Hip-hop hit it big in New York with African Americans, and it would soon spread across the country and across color lines.

From that point on, dance continued to evolve, while staying true to its roots.  Ballet is still all the rage, tap dance still brings a smile to a person's face, and jazz is still prevalent on stage and on TV.  Hip-hop is big in clubs, and a new craze similar to the Twist occurs every decade or so.

The history of dance shows that while new styles may emerge, some things stay the same.  Dance will always be about movement, rhythm and fun.  Because of that, it will continue to be spectacular to watch and exhilarating to perform.
