The Ideal Belly Dance Skirts for the Regular Dancers

Belly dance skirts are an important part of your costume if you are a serious belly dancer. Belly dancing can be initially taken up as a fun activity and even to get some exercise. The rhythmic motions of the dance can really work up the muscles and tone your body. You will rarely find a belly dancer who does not have a perfectly structured body with taut and pulled-in stomach muscles and a proportionate figure. The dance involves so much of action that you can easily get a great figure while enjoying the whole routine. But when you graduate to becoming a professional dancer, you do need the right kind of apparel to make the dance really interesting and appealing.

Comfortable yet Graceful

When you take up belly dancing on a regular basis, you will want belly dance skirts which are comfortable and which will aid you in your dancing and not entangle you. The skirt should be fitted well so that it hugs the body and is loose flowing at the right places. Since the movements in the dance are very artistic and intricate, the skirt should help you perform well. It should not restrict your movements. At the same time, it should not make you look disproportionate or vulgar either.

Cool Fabric

The fabric of the belly dance skirts is a very important factor in making it attractive as well as comfortable. Cotton is by far the most comfortable but may not look very alluring with the spotlights on you. Most often, dancers prefer using satins, velvets, chiffons and silks for making the skirts. Depending on your budget, you can choose the type of material you want. Usually, velvet and silk are very costly with satins and chiffons being among the affordable materials. But all of them can make the dancer look gorgeous and beautiful while bringing out the grace of the dancer.

Modesty vs Sensuousness

Chiffon is used by bold belly dancers who don't mind looking seductive on stage. Since chiffon is a very transparent material, the legs can clearly be seen as the dancer performs her routine. If you want to look modest, then satins are a better choice. They catch the light too and really add a shimmer to the outfit when you dance. Being very light and hugging the body well, it can make the belly dance skirts whirl and also emphasize the movements when the dancer moves her waist. Velvet can look good but it is too heavy so will not be very comfortable for the intricate moves.

Right Kind of Style

There can be many kinds of styles of the belly dance skirts. The choice of the style depends on the type of belly dance you want to do and the audience you will have. If you want to do a lot of whirling on stage, then a full skirt will make you look very graceful. If you want to draw attention to your legs, then choose a skirt which is bit shorter. You can also go for skirts which are full length but have slits at the sides to show off your legs. Most of the skirts are embellished with embroidery, coins, sequins and jewels to make them look more attractive.

Modest belly dance costume?

I've been learning belly dance for a few months, and in a few more months my school is having an international talent show, and I plan to dance for it.

I'm not embarrassed of my body, but of wearing a coin bra in front of classmates. I have to put up with immature students untill June. What could I wear that is a little more modest but still shows my movements?

You know bellydance has been around for a long time and the current fashion of the bra and belt sets are not at all traditional, they were influenced by hollywood glamor and the fact that it is what westerners expected to see. Why not try a more traditional costume or "folkloric" costume. If your really into the beads and glamor you can get more modernized "folkloric" costumes as well. Also if it's for an international talent show and you really want to represent the middle east a coin bra and belt are not at all representative of that. The actually represent like 1970's American style bellydance. Here are some links to some more traditional type costumes. This one can be worn over a long plain dress or tank top and skirt with a hip wrap and is fairly inexpensive as far as costumes go but adds enough glamour and is still more modest.

Most of these dresses are fairly simple to sew and can then be worn with a beaded or coin hip wrap or even a plain cloth scarf.
