Westend Entertainment - London's Theatre
London's West End is greatly thought of for professional stage shows. Together with New York's Broadway, Westend entertainment is often thought to deliver many of the very best productions in the world. Viewing Shows in West End is incredibly popular entertainment particularly with tourists. Countless theatre shows and specifically hit musicals are performed in the great venues of London's West End. A huge number of people attend a West End theatre show every year. Westend Theatre Breaks are also really popular in the United kingdom. Theatre Breaks are frequently booked as a weekend luxury to celebrate a special occasion. A Westend show is the main entertainment but booked along with accommodation and often reservations in a top restaurant. Be sure to book your West End Show Tickets as soon as possible as popular shows sell out very fast.
The main theatre district of London consists of approximately forty theatres and was rebranded by Westminster Council and the Society of London Theatre as ‘Theatreland'. It is located in the middle of the Westend of Central London and is historically defined by The Strand to the South, Oxford Street to the North, Regent Street to the West and Kingsway to the East. Prominent theatre streets include Drury Lane, Shaftesbury Avenue plus The Strand. Most of the shows are musicals, classic plays and comedy performances.
London's Westend theatre region became established with the opening of many small theatres about 1806. The development of the Westend entertainment district gained pace with the Theatres Act 1843 which relaxed the conditions for the performance of plays. In the following decades, lots of new venues were opened. That trend continued until the 1st world war. For the duration of the 1950s and 1960s, lots of plays were created in theatre clubs in order to escape the censorship then exercised by the Lord Chamberlain's Office. However, the Theatres Act 1968 ultimately abolished censorship of the stage.
Many Westend theatres are of late Victorian or Edwardian construction and most are privately owned. The majority of them have great character and the largest and best maintained include grand neo-classical, Romanesque or Victorian façades and magnificent detailed interior design and decoration. Then again, leg room is usually cramped and audience amenities like bars and public conveniences are often much smaller than in modern theatres. The protected status of the structures and their confined urban locations, together with economic constraints, make it very hard to make considerable improvements to the furnishings, fixtures and fittings.
Many of the long running musicals performed in the West End have profitably played to audiences for many years. A few of the most popular theatre shows include We Will Rock You which is set in a futuristic world where rock music is banned, Les Miserables which is a global award winning musical about an epic tale of passion and destruction, Chicago is about a girl who has murdered her lover but is acquitted, The Lion King which is an adaptation of the Disney film, The Phantom of the Opera which tells the tale of the phantom that terrorises the Paris Opera, Billy Elliot which is the touching account of a schoolboy who loves ballet, Dirty Dancing which is the stage version of the classic movie, Sister Act is a new adaptation of a hit movie, Mamma Mia is about a mother and daughter and three potential dads, and Stomp which is a fast paced mixture of music, tap dance and percussion. The list is endless as there really are so many Westend theatre productions to choose from. There really is something that could appeal to everyone. A West end Theatre show is a truly fantastic night out to remember.

How to get my mom to let me take ballet, character dance, pointe, and theater dance at the same time?
I use to do ballet, tap and jazz from 3 to 9 then i moved and my siblings were to young and didn't like to come to my practices so my mom asked me if it was okay if she pulled me out of dance and of course i said yes to please her and to this day i wish i said no i miss dancing ive practiced every year since im still a Little behind but i really want to do it one day i want to be a prima ballerina and my parents just laugh and mock me every time i bring it up to this day ive said nothing but buy knew ballet shoes or any kind of dancing shoes that i needed to practice i still want to do it but i have no idea how to get her to say yes i haven't asked her in over a year but im also in cheerleading which im thinking of quiting because of way to much drama, too much crying and too much blaming others im sick and tired of it any ideas?
Paige, a "prima ballerina" usually refers to the best female ballet dancer in a ballet company. First of all, if the last time you took professional dance classes was when you were 9, you can definitley not go onto pointe immediatley and any dance school that says you can is not a good one. Most dancers training to be professional take at least 15 - 30 hours of ballet a week and their training is complete by age 16, when they apprentice with a company (usually dropping out of school to do so). Dance careers are usually over by the age of 20 AND only 10% of dancers trained to be professional actually make the cut and only a further 10% of THEM make a living out of it. The dance world is a tough one. Ballet, character dance, pointe and theatre dance isn't enough. If your mum will let you, I would suggest much, much, much, much more ballet. Also, professionals-in-training train at top notch ballet academies, not competition or recital dance schools.
You can, however, still be a very good dancer taking those classes and go onto a career teaching dance or choreographing it. Tell your mum what you told us here. That dance is your passion and you are willing to give up cheerleading in order to pursue it. Good luck x

Dance Theatre $21.66 Kurt Jooss was born shortly after the turn of this century, a time that ushered in the Age of Modernism. His achievement places him in the ranks of those leading artists who have permanently changed our cultural landscape. The significant stages of his career roughly correspond to the major cultural and political events that influenced the lives of his generation. The first and possibly most important period of Joosss artistic development spanned the years of the Weimar Republic from 1918 to 1932. His career received a major setback when the Nazi regime drove him from Germany in 1933. He escaped to England, where at Dartington Hall he continued his work by organizing a dance community that included his school and his company. Joosss career took its final turn when in 1949 he accepted the invitation to return to his homeland. His renewed artistic and pedagogical efforts in postwar West Germany led to the eventual development of the postmodern German Tanztheater. |

Shakespeare's Theatre $200 Shakespeare's Theatre consolidates the author's forty years of experience in studying and staging Shakespeare's plays. Under an alphabetical list of relevant terms, names and concepts, the book reviews current knowledge of the character and operation of theatres in Shakespeare's time, with an explanation of their origins. Coverage includes the practices of Elizabethan actors and script writers: methods of characterization; gesture, blocking and choreography, including music, dance and fighting; actors' rhetorical interaction with audiences; and use of costumes, stage props, and make-up. The author makes use of scripts and scholarship about original stagings of Shakespeare and suggests how those productions related to modern staging. Much of this material has developed as a result of the recent increased interest in the significance of performance for interpreting Shakespeare, including the recovery of the archaeological evidence about the original Rose and Globe Theaters. The book contains current bibliographies for each topic and consolidates these in an overall bibliography for Shakespeare and his theaters. |

The Death of Character $10.79 "Extremely well written, and exceedingly well informed, this is a work that opens a variety of important questions in sophisticated and theoretically nuanced ways. It is hard to imagine a better tour guide than Fuchs for a trip through the last thirty years of, as she puts it, what we used to call the 'avant-garde.'" -- Essays in Theatre "... an insightful set of theoretical 'takes' on how to think about theatre before and theatre after modernism." -- Theatre Journal "In short, for those who never experienced a 'postmodern swoon,' Elinor Fuchs is an excellent informant." -- Performing Arts Journal "... a thoughtful, highly readable contribution to the evolving literature on theatre and postmodernism." -- Modern Drama "A work of bold theoretical ambition and exceptional critical intelligence.... Fuchs combines mastery of contemporary cultural theory with a long and full participation in American theater culture: the result is a long-needed, long-awaited elaboration of a new theatrical paradigm." -- Una Chaudhuri, New York University "What makes this book exceptional is Fuchs' acute rehearsal of the stranger unnerving events of the last generation that have -- in the cross-reflections of theory -- determined our thinking about theater. She seems to have seen and absorbed them all." -- Herbert Blau, Center for Twentieth Century Studies, University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee "Surveying the extraordinary scene of the postmodern American theater, Fuchs boldly frames key issues of subjectivity and performance with the keenest of critical eyes for the compelling image and the telling gesture." -- Joseph Roach, Tulane University "... Fuchs makes an exceptionally lucid and eloquent case for the value and contradictions in postmodern theater." -- Alice Rayner, Stanford University "Arguably the most accessible yet learned road map to what remains for many impenetrable territory?an obligatory addition to all academic libraries serving upper-division undertgraduates and above." -- Choice "A systematic, comprehensive and historically-minded assessment of what, precisely, 'post-modern theatre' is, anyway." -- American Theatre In this engrossing study, Elinor Fuchs explores the multiple worlds of theater after modernism. While The Death of Character engages contemporary cultural and aesthetic theory, Elinor Fuchs always speaks as an active theater critic. Nine of her Village Voice and American Th |
