The chunk of rosin has to be broken up first. As the dancers make their trip through the rosin box (it's just a low wooden box) they step on the chunk and break it down into powder. This powder will last quite a long time before more rosin has to be added to the box. The procedure is generally that the dancer presses the pointe of her shoe into the powdered rosin, then steps in on her heels, breaking any remaining chunks. Knock your foot against the edge of the box to shake off any excess and you're good to go.

I suspect that with the increase of marley floors rosin boxes are becoming less necessary.
