As far as the style of dance shoes goes, it's fairly easy to choose. While there are shoe styles available for disco, tango, salsa, swing and other forms of ballroom dance, they are all very similar. The only real difference is how tall the heel of the shoe is. If you are a beginner ballroom dancer, you should probably get a shoe with a low heel.

The material that ballroom dance shoes are made of is also crucial. You should avoid wearing rubber-soled shoes while ballroom dancing, for instance. The reason for that is that rubber can stick to the floor as you dance and impede your mobility. If you can't turn as quickly as you'd like to, your performance will suffer. You could even injure yourself.

Alternatively, you could get the dance shoes that are leather-soled. Leather-soled shoes tend to be more reliable. They won't stick to the floor like rubber-soled shoes do.

Of course, if you are really serious about finding the best, the good idea is to get them custom made for you. Custom made shoes feature comfortable cushioning and soft suede soles that are ideal for ballroom dancing. On top of that, they are extremely light weight, allowing you to easily pick up your feet and move across the floor. They also feature a steel shank support. All of those features make custom dance shoes a great choice.

The next big question is does the shoe fit? You should get snug fitting dance shoes. You may even want to get them smaller than your standard shoes. That's because, if your shoe is loose, your feet could turn and rub. That could give you blisters and twisted ankles, ruining your dancing experience.

The price of a pair of dance shoes can range anywhere from $60 for a discounted pair to $150 or so for top of the line. So, you should be prepared to spend a little bit for the best possible pair. A good pair of dancing shoes will pay for themselves quickly in the comfort they provide, though.

Is there a medical explanation for this ankle/ foot problem?

On Saturday I went ballroom dancing for a total of 4 hours, I had an hour break between the second and third hour. After leaving the ballroom dance class I later went to another dancing function and when I went to put on my shoes on, my left foot/ankle would not support me. My ankle/foot wasn't swollen, and it didn't hurt at all, I could walk without the shoe just fine, but when I put the shoe on all I could do was limp. I am very puzzled by this, the shoes didn't hurt and I had worn them off and on days before. Is there a such thing as ankle fatigue? I'm just looking for a medical explanation as to what happened?
