Turn A Basic Tutu Into An Amazing Ballet Costume

To turn a basic tutu into an amazing ballet costume, start by doing some research. What period of history is the ballet is set in? The costume can be altered to reflect that time period. Historic costumes are the most interesting to reproduce and imitating an historic costume can be quite fun. Tutus have changed throughout history. Marie Taglioni wore the first romantic tutu with its flowing layers of tulle that fell between her knees and ankles and softly moved around her in 1832. From the romantic tutu the classical tutu was born.

It was shorter and shaped more like a bell. The bell-shaped tutu was first worn by Virginia Zucci in the 1880's. Next came the pancake tutu, which jutted straight out from the waist and had wire hooping to retain its shape. The tutu evolved even further with George Balanchine's development of the powder-puff tutu, with less structure and fewer layers of tulle.

By examining the basic tutu's original structure, you can determine from what period of ballet the tutu originated. The tutu can be shortened and stiffened and made into a bell-shaped tutu, pancake tutu, or powder puff, but to preserve its original purpose and refurbish the tutu, try working with its original length and making it into a fantastic version of its original calling.

To make a romantic tutu an exciting romp into history, research the romantic period. The romantic period was known for its ethereal flowing tutus. By starting with a romantic tutu and adding a matching colored bodice, the basic tutu can become a romantic costume. The bodice should be fitted and wrapped in the same tulle, perhaps with a loosely attached tulle stole creating an even more ethereal look. If you're starting with a pancake tutu, you may want to create a Baroque look with a tightly fitted bodice of heavy weight brocaded satin and interspersed with lace trim.

Use boning to create the look of tightly fitting undergarments that ladies of the day wore. Add this elaborate bodice to a hooped or wired pancake or powder-puff tutu and it will exemplify the period from wince it surely came. By doing some simple research or maybe even simplifying that research to simply looking at pictures, you can discover a new upgraded look for a simple tutu. Take the tutu back in time and celebrate its intended purpose. Make it grand with details that reflect a period of the past.

Does any body know where I can find good ballet costumes? I usually look good in dark red, dark green, or royal blue. And I like higher backs on my costumes. It doesn't matter if it is a long skirt or a tutu.
